Funeral Services scheduled January 19 for local artist and musician Art Landerman

Funeral services for local artist and musician Arthur H. Landerman, Jr., 70, who passed away on December 18, 2022, will be held at the Crossroads Church of the Nazarene at 2750 Rogers Avenue in Ellicott City, Maryland on Thursday, January 19, 2023, at 6 pm.

A well respected and much-loved artist and musician, Art graduated from the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) in 1980. Locally recognized as a portraitist of people and pets as well as a commercial illustrator, Art’s career spanned over 50 years. He could paint or draw almost anything, and often exhibited some of his lifelike portraits of pets and paintings of people at his art studio located in the Howard County Center for the Arts in Ellicott City.

Art began his illustration career in the late 70’s before his graduation from MICA, providing illustrations for Columbia Maryland based Faith At Work Magazine, founded by prominent Episcopal Priest Sam Shoemaker, co-founder of AA’s 12-step program.

Immediately after graduation, Art landed his first job as a graphic designer at A.D. Advertising Associates, a Columbia Maryland ad agency owned by Patuxent Publishing Corporation. At the agency, and later in his career, Art worked on a wide array of accounts, providing realistic, humorous, or quirky pen-and-ink illustrations or paintings, whatever suited the subject. Art liked to say that he illustrated everything from bagels to soft frozen yogurt and everything in-between. In 2002, he started his own business, continuing his career as an illustrator and also establishing himself as a muralist. He was hired by the 7th Day Adventist Church to create new illustrations for Uncle Arthur’s Bedtime Stories. His favorite mural was at Forte Meade Maryland where it still greets all new recruits upon their arrival.

Other career highlights include work for The Columbia Bank, The Columbia Festival of the Arts, The Columbia Foundation, and The Bentley in Washington DC, the final project of developer Richard N. Dubin. Samples of Art’s work can be found on his website, artlanderman.com. He also shared his talent and love of illustration with the younger generation, teaching summers in the Kids On Campus program at Howard Community College and for over ten years at the Cornerstone Homeschool.

An accomplished musician, Art co-founded local rock band, “4 On The Floor With Overdrive” with his wife Lauren. The band performed at local venues throughout Central Maryland.

A native of Michigan, he was born to Arthur Landerman, Sr., and Helen Landerman in Menominee, and graduated from high school, and served in the Navy before enrolling at MICA.

Faith was a central focus in Art’s life, saying that “faith in Christ is essential.” He remained an active member of Crossroads Church of the Nazarene in Howard County where he served on the praise team as a guitarist until his passing.

He is survived by his wife Lauren; daughter Laura Landerman; son Drew Landerman; Sisters Marge Schuette, Marian Michalski and Maxine Corriveau; stepsons Austin and Steven; brother-in-law Tim Michalski; granddaughters Lily and Jackie (the apples of his eye) and many nieces and nephews.

He will be buried near his favorite fishing spot in Menominee.
